Leonie vs Vanessa, Festelle FV53 Belgium v England Pt I
In 1988 Beatrice Goffin and her husband Michel led a team of women wrestlers from Belgium to fight a British team from the WCS club (Women’s Combat Sport). The event was held in an apartment room with the floor covered with thick wrestling mat. The videos of the matches from this event were released via the Festelle label on tapes FV53 and FV54.
The first fight of the event was held between Leonie from Rochefort in Belgium and Vanessa from Manchester, England (5’5”, 100lbs). The fight was introduced by Phil Barrett and refereed by Michel Goffin with Beatrice watching from the doorway of an adjacent room.
The match started with the two fighters locking hands in a test of strength from which they moved quickly to a double headlock. The fight moved around room with Leonie repeatedly trying unsuccessfully to take Vanessa to the mat. Eventually Leonie managed to get Vanessa down, but English fighter fought back by locking her legs round Leonie in a defensive bodyscissors. Leonie broke Vanessa’s scissors by getting to her feet which caused Vanessa drop off to the mat, as she did so Leonie covered her and skilfully manoeuvred the Belgian into a reverse bodyscissors. Leonie’s thighs bulged as she tightened her scissor hold quickly bringing a submission from Vanessa. The referee called the break and awarded the first point to Leonie.

The second session started with another test of strength from which Leonie broke free to apply a standing headlock on Vanessa. Leonie tried to wrestle the British fighter to the mat, but she stubbornly resisted and managed to get her own headlock on the Belgian. The fight moved to the mat where Leonie locked a body-scissors on her opponent, but this time Vanessa quickly broke free and both fighters returned to their feet.
Leonie attacked again and manoeuvred Vanessa into another headlock. For over a minute the Belgian fighter tried to wrestle Vanessa to the mat, but the British girl resisted doggedly as the action moved across the apartment from one wall to another. Finally Leonie changed tactics, she moved behind Vanessa and leap onto the British girl’s back to take her to the mat in a body-scissors.
As Leonie tightened the body-scissors she also wrapped her right arm across Vanessa’s neck in a slack choke hold. The referee moved in to tell Leonie to remove the choke, but surprisingly Vanessa said “No.. No..No..”. The ref stood back as Leonie held Vanessa trapped in her combination of scissors and loose choke. Vanessa then lay her head back and exclaimed “Go on squeeze me tight… ohh!” The referee moved again to get Leonie to loosen her choke, but Vanessa wasn’t troubled by the choke as she was enjoying so much being squeezed in the body-scissors! After 30 seconds in the hold Vanessa called out “squeeze….. squeeze…..squeeze….” much to the small audience’s amusement.
In total Leonie held Vanessa trapped in the body-scissors for about 90 seconds and it seems as if Vanessa would have liked to have been squeezed for longer if it were not for time being called on the match. The referee got both fighters to their feet and declared Leonie the winner by one submission.
