The Miss Amazon topless wrestling tournament was a unique event held at DWW’s 1996 summer gathering held at a private resort in Hungary. This was the second time that DWW had held a summer event; the previous one was at Chateau Seregelyes, Hungary in 1995. Sixteen young women took part in the Miss Amazon tournament; all but two were novices to wrestling.
The tournament started in the evening at sunset with a “beauty contest” in which each of sixteen young women was interviewed about their background and their interests. At this point in proceedings the contestants were in evening dresses as if they had just finished a formal dinner.
The weather was very hot, so the first rounds of fighting were held at night when it was cooler. A black shiny wrestling mat with a pink edging was used which was illuminated by a set of powerful lights. GR, the owner of DWW, now describes the video quality of these night time fights as “lousy”, but the considering the relatively primitive nature of the technical equipment available at the time the pictures are remarkably good. The unique arrangement of venue and lighting makes for some striking images on the videos. The semi-final and final matches were held the next day in daylight and the quality of these recordings is not quite so impressive.
The tournament was organised as a regular knock-out contest with 8 fights in the first round, 4 in second then a semi-final and final. The fights were referee by the English man known affectionately as “Jeff the Ref”. Most of the fights were quite short; some were decided by a single fall, while others went on for longer. It seems that the length of each fight was left to the discretion of the referee.
The young women, all aged between 18 and 22, were mainly from Hungary, and were all athletic, lithe and attractive. For some of the fighters it seems as this was their one and only appearance for DWW, but others would go on to be regular DWW fighters for many years to come. Experience of the two non-novice fighters (Eveline and Anita) is evident in the tournament as they progressed through to the final with Eveline taking the Championship after a hard fought battle with Anita.
Unfortunately the 3 video tapes of the tournament (DWW-72, DWW-73 and DWW-74) are no longer available on the DWW website. However, most of the fights are available in the “Fight of the Month” category. Also unavailable is the so called Beauty Contest that was held before the first round fights.
