Mildred Burke was one of the pioneers of womens wrestling. She began her career wrestling for promoter Billy Wolfe in circus & carnaval side shows (wrestling all comers, & defeating over 200 men in the process), & ended by operating Millie's Gym, an early source for training female wrestlers, & producing 8mm wrestling films.
While Mildred was not strictly a submission wrestler as we concider the term today, she was the inspiration for many of the women who have gone on to found the sport. She was a true trail blazer for womens wrestling, submission or otherwise, & without her pioneering work, the field would not be what it is today. I guess you could call Mildred the "grandmother" of modern female submission wrestling.
