California Amazon was formed by the legendary Judell Du Long in 1973, and was arguably the first video production company that focused primarily on competitive wrestling. It was based in Pine Valley, California in southeastern San Diego County.
During its existence California Amazon filmed / photographed and released more than 300 submission wrestling matches, the first half of which were shot on Super 8 films with a switch to VHS and Beta in 1981. The earliest California Amazon videos were from 1974 with the latest videos released in 1985.
Judell said in a 2014 interview that she wrestled Nancy Hogle in the first ever California Amazon match. In the same interview, she also said that the first California Amazon match released on VHS and Beta was a 1981 battle between Nancy Skarvan versus Cindy Brooks.
There were also a number of boxing matches released by California Amazon.
